Screen Printing
Process |
| The
screen printing process requires many steps to create
screen printed apparel. The first step is
designing the artwork to be printed on a clear film to
make a positive of the design. The film is
attached to the screen. The screen is made of
polyester with very small holes. The polyester
screen is coated with emulsion which is sensitive to
light. The screen is then "burnt", which means it
is exposed to intense UV light. The film positive
blocks the light and the emulsion is cured where the
light shines through. The film is removed and the
part of the emulsion that was not exposed is washed out
of the screen. After the screen is dry, it is
placed on the printing press. A one color design
set-up is very fast. As additional colors are
added, the set-up time increases as each screen must be
precisely aligned. After the job is set-up, the
printing process begins. The ink is forced through
the screen with a squeegee one color at a time.
The ink must be cured and is placed on a conveyor dryer
at 330 degrees. When the garments exit they are
finished. When the print job is finished, the
screens are "reclaimed", which means the ink and
emulsion is removed. The screens are coated with
the emulsion and the process starts over again.
